New World Notes - Peaceful Atom: Early Daze

03/10/2015 12:00 pm
03/11/2015 9:00 pm

This week on New World Notes: radio program #366, March 10, 2015, from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m. (and on Wednesday from 8:30 to 9:00 p.m.), host Kenneth Dowst airs a nice audio collage by Virtual Renderings (a.k.a. Chazk).

It explores the wild promises made by proponents of civilian nuclear power projects--and the very scary reality behind the propaganda--from 1950 through the meltdown at Three Mile Island in 1979. Sound sources include old propaganda films, news reports, interviews from documentary films, and some music--all very nicely woven together.

Tuesday, March 10, from noon to 1 p.m. (Eastern time), I'll be hosting a special live show. I'll be playing the Peaceful Atom recording plus some music and other commentary. It's part of WWUH's twice-yearly Fundraising Marathon. Your pledge of support during this hour counts as a vote of support for the station and especially its lineup of public-affairs shows (including this one).

Call between noon and 1 to make a pledge, and I'll thank you on-air (unless you prefer otherwise). But pledges made at any time are appreciated. The number to call is 1-800-444-9984. You can also donate online at your convenience. Many thanks!

"Peaceful Atom: Early Daze" was previously broadcast, as NWN #181, in August 2011.

An archive of Virtual Rendering's collages is available on Radio4All.net.

New World Notes is produced under the auspices (Latin for "unisex bathroom") of WWUH-FM, a community service of the University of Hartford.

You can listen to any installment of New World Notes online or else download it (as an mp3 audio file) for later listening. The show is archived at both A-Infos Radio Project and (from #90 onwards) the Internet Archive. Either link should get you a reverse-chronological listing of available installments. Or browse the show's Web site: Each installment has a page; each page has links to the recorded audio; and a handy table of contents will quickly find the installment you want.

Series overview: Political and social commentary in a variety of genres. Exploring the gap between what we want--and what they're trying to make us settle for.
