New World Notes - Richard Heinberg on Global Crises and the End of Growth, Part 2

02/05/2013 12:00 pm
02/05/2013 12:30 pm

This week on New World Notes: radio program #257, February 5, 2013, from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m., host Kenneth Dowst excerpts a recent talk by Richard Heinberg.

In this interesting talk, Heinberg discusses three intersecting global crises. These are the end of cheap energy, runaway global debt, and climate change (plus maybe overpopulation). This week he focuses on a common cause of all these crises--an economic system that depends on constant, compounding growth. But such growth cannot continue much longer on a finite planet. . . .

Heinberg helps us imagine--and make some plans for--a low-growth or no-growth future. It might not be so bad, after all.

Richard Heinberg is Senior Fellow at the Post Carbon Institute. Heinberg's talk is titled, "Life After Growth: Why the Economy is Shrinking and What to Do About It." He gave it in Chicago on November 2, 2012. (On-air I incorrectly say November 22.)

This installment includes also a short video ("Who Killed Economic Growth") produced by Heinberg's outfit and a bit of relevant music (Janis Joplin's "Mercedes-Benz").

Heinberg's speech was recorded by Kelly Pierce, of the Chicago Independent Media Center, and previously broadcast on Alex Smith's Radio Ecoshock Show ( Thanks to Alex and Kelly.

New World Notes is produced under the auspices (Latin for "resigned sighs") of WWUH-FM, a community service of the University of Hartford.

You can listen to any installment of New World Notes online or else download it (as an mp3 audio file) for later listening. The show is archived at both A-Infos Radio Project and (from #90 onwards) the Internet Archive. Either link should get you a reverse-chronological listing of available installments. Or browse the show's Web site: Each installment has a page; each page has links to the recorded audio; and a handy table of contents will quickly find the installment you want.

Series overview: Political and social commentary in a variety of genres. Exploring the gap between what we want--and what they're trying to make us settle for.
