Brian Battles

Brian Battles joined WWUH in 2015. Currently he has this show:

• The Battles Zone, Mondays 3-6 a.m.

The Monday morning show is an unbounded melange of rock, from classic and obscure 1960s and '70s tracks to today's latest releases, presented in the style of the free-form FM stations of the 1970s, when any quality music was played regardless of specific genre or label, encompassing rock, jazz, folk, blues, etc...and the DJ endeavored to produce a mix or flow to the music, not just a random mishmash of "hits".

About the host himself: Brian Battles was infected with the terminal, incurable broadcasting virus as a youngster. He grew up in East Hartford, and initiated his on-air hijinks on a friend's neighborhood "pirate" station during middle school, then got on "real" radio legit in 1975 when he began attending the University of Connecticut and joined WHUS. He's proud to have been a key member of the staff that upgraded WHUS from mono to stereo, changed its rules to allow non-student members of the community to join the staff, and increased the station's broadcasting schedule to full time 24/7/365. He broke into commercial broadcasting at WINY in Putnam, then worked at WXLS, WKND, WCCC (three separate stints), WBAB and WAQY.

Brian decided to join the fun at WWUH in 2015, reuniting with former WCCC co-worker, WWUH General Manager John Ramsey. In the meantime he was also Features Editor for QST Magazine at ARRL HQ in Newington, an audio producer, and a computer programmer. Battles has also been a ham radio operator since 1976 (WS1O). He has two (embarrassed!) children. Interesting trivia note: While a student at East Hartford High School in the early 1970s, Battles offered his artistic services to Station Manager Marcia Simon to do a WWUH Program Guide cover, for which he created an original pen and ink drawing of Venice illustrating Ponchielli's opera La Gioconda.
