Chuck Obuchowski will feature an interview with World Music pioneer Paul Winter on October 13 at 10:00 a.m. during Tuesday Morning Jazz: Out Here & Beyond (which airs weekly on WWUH from 9 a.m. - noon). Topics include Winter's October 23rd concert in Middletown, CT, his current ambitious recording project, and the history of his ensemble's annual solstice concerts.
Saxophonist Paul Winter has had a long and storied career. In November, 1962, Winter's sextet became the first jazz group to ever perform at the White House. Earlier that year, the young instrumentalists were awarded a State Department tour that brought their music to 23 Latin American countries; upon return to the US, the Paul Winter Sextet were among the first jazz performers to introduce North American audiences to bossa nova and other popular Brazilian rhythms.
Winter formed his now-legendary Consort in 1967. While it has undergone many personnel changes over the decades, the Paul Winter Consort continues to record and tour - and will bring its distinctive music to Middletown on Friday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m. The event takes place at The Sanctuary at 190 Court in downtown Middletown. Central City Productions is presenting the performance; tickets and more details at www.centralcityproductionsct.com and 860-685-3355.
