Although June 29th marks the 50th anniversary of Eric Dolphy's death, the work of this brilliant jazz artist continues to inspire new generations of musicians and listeners. On Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31 Seed Artists presents Eric Dolphy: Freedom of Sound, a festival and symposium in celebration of the music and life of the unique multi-instrumentalist and gifted composer/improviser.
The event takes place at Montclair State University, 1 Normal Ave., Montclair, NJ. Details at seedartists.org, or at 862-621-9761.
Pheeroan akLaff, drummer and Wesleyan University educator, is co-founder of Seed and one of the producers of Freedom of Sound. On Tuesday, May 27 at 10 a.m,, he will discuss the festival and its impressive roster of musicians with Chuck Obuchowski during Out Here & Beyond.
Chuck will also feature music by some of the artists who will be performing at this weekend’s celebration – most notably bassist Richard Davis, a longtime Dolphy collaborator. Over 30 musicians will participate in various instrumental combinations, and several Dolphy compositions which were never recorded during his lifetime will be premiered.
Seed Artists, founded in 2005, seeks to build community through the arts. Proceeds from Eric Dolphy: Freedom of Sound will be donated to the Jazz Foundation of America (JFA) and to the Montclair Academy of Dance Laboratory of Music (MADLUM). Tickets for the weekend’s concerts may be purchased at 888-718-4253.
