Tuesday Evening Classics - Ira Braus on C.P.E. Bach

03/04/2014 4:00 pm
03/04/2014 8:00 pm

On March 4, 2014, Tuesday Evening Classics from 7-8 p.m., host David Schonfeld will have as his guest in the studio Professor Ira Braus of the Hartt School of Music.

Ira, a frequent guest on the program, will talk to David about Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, born this month in 1714.

During the year 2014, the world of music celebrates the tercentenary of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788). Carl Philipp Emanuel was was the second (surviving) son of the great Johann Sebastian, and in his time was even more renowned than his illustrious father and teacher. Carl Philipp Emanuel was a keyboard virtuoso and was long attached to the court of Frederick the Great. He composed music for all the standard combinations of voices and instruments and is associated with the "empfindsamer Stil" ("sensitive style"). Since he occupied a temporal niche between the convenient category designations of "Baroque" and "Classical", audiences--and even music historians--have not always given this innovative composer the regard he deserves.

Prof. Ira Braus--a great enthusiast of C.P.E. Bach--will endeavor to explain to us why the composer was so original and remarkable, and will help us to better appreciate his genius in the light of the esthetics and values of his time. Ira Braus is a pianist with many concerts and several recordings to his credit. He is currently Associate Professor of Music History at the Hartt School of Music. He teaches a popular course in the history of the string quartet. His wide-ranging interests include historical performance practice; the theory and psychology of music; and the keyboard works of Haydn and his contemporaries, and of Brahms and his contemporaries.

We will listen to recorded examples with commentary by Ira.

From 4-6 and from 7-8, David will feature music by C.P.E. Bach, and selections as listed in the program guide:

G. P. Telemann: Suite in G major after Die Kleine Kammermusik
Nancy Van de Vate: Violin Concerto No. 2 (1996)
Domenico Scarlatti: Keyboard Sonatas

Ira Braus will be performing a piano recital on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at Capitol Community College, 950 Main St, Hartford, CT. The program will feature works by C.P.E. Bach and his contemporaries. It will take place in the Centinel Hill Hall Auditorium on the 11th floor. Admission is free and the public is warmly invited.
