In Program #21, David talks to Otto Wahl.
Otto Wahl is professor of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Hartford. His work includes numerous research articles and presentations related to stigma and to media depictions of mental illnesses.
In this first segment, Otto talks about his background; the PsyD program at UH; defining mental illness; when does a problem become a disorder; diagnosing mental disorders and the DSM; mental illness and stigma; the manifestations, causes, and history of this stigma; the miracle and limitation of modern medications; current research into causation and cure; and the role of media in perpetuating misconceptions about mental illness.
