New World Notes - Michael Parenti on The Costs of Empire (Part 2 of 2)
This week on New World Notes: radio program #286, August 27, 2013, from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m., host Kenneth Dowst plays a recording of Part 2 of a brilliant and witty speech by Progressive political scientist Michael Parenti, delivered in 1994. Twenty years later, the talk is every bit as cogent and relevant as it it was then.
Parenti shows that empires are about class and wealth, not nationalism. Empires are ruinously expensive, but the expense is paid by the 99% in order to make the 1% even richer. The costs include not only dollars but also environmental damage, the gutting of the civilian economy, loss of liberty, degradation of politics and public discourse, increasing poverty, many deaths and injuries of our soldiers, and many others.
The gloomy picture is enlivened by Parenti's trademark wit and humor.
New World Notes is produced under the auspices (Latin for "average quality") of WWUH-FM, a community service of the University of Hartford.
