Tuesday Classics - Telemann's Tafelmusik
Join Tuesday Classics Host David Schonfeld on August 30 from 4-8 PM for the second part of a two-part broadcast of the complete Tafelmusik or Musique de Table by the Baroque composer George Philipp Telemann. "Composed in 1733, Telemann's Tafelmusik has been compared as a collection to the renowned Brandenburg Concertos of Johann Sebastian Bach in clearly demonstrating the composer’s supreme skill in handling a diversity of musical genres and a variety of instruments" (Wikipedia). Telemann divided the work into three "Productions", each beginning with an orchestral Overture and ending with a orchestral Conclusion. In between, Telemann includes some of his finest music for small and large ensembles (solo sonatas, trio sonatas, quartets, and concertos).
We will listen to Production 3 of Tafelmusik as recorded by the Freiburger Barockorchester in 2010. In addition, we will also sample the late keyboard sonatas of Giovanni Benedetto Platti in a recent release by Luca Guglielmi on fortepiano and harpsichord.
