Tuesday Evening Classics: Rare Recordings by Clarinetist, Mitchell Lurie

On Tuesday, April 25, 2017, Dr. Alan Lurie will appear as special guest with Tuesday Classics host, David Schonfeld. Dr. Lurie will play and discuss a number of rare and private recordings made by his father, Mitchell Lurie (1922-2008), one of the 20th century's greatest clarinetists. Among the selections will be:

Brahms Clarinet Quintet, In Performance with Muir Quartet at Museum of the Rockies, Montana State University, his final public performance in July, 1999 at age 77.  CD from KUFM.

Mozart Clarinet Quintet with Muir Quartet, recorded at Wellesley College Chapel in 1992, his first recording with Muir.  CD from EcoClassics.

Brahms Sonata #1 with Leona Lurie (wife) at piano.  Recorded at Hancock Hall, Univ Southern Calif, in the room where they first met!  Crystal Records, 1971.

Muczynski Time Pieces, with composer at piano. Recorded at Laurel Records, Hollywood, CA in 1984.

Schumann Romances, recorded live by BBC during 1984 recital at International Clarinet Congress, London, with Roger Vignoles, Piano.

Debussy Arabesque #1 and Danse, recorded 1960 for Capital Records, Laurindo Almeida, Guitar (Conversations with a Guitar).

Poulenc Trio for Piano, Oboe and Bassoon – oboe part transcribed to B-flat Clarinet by M Lurie.  Ecoclassics, Recorded 1998 at Purchase College Conservatory of Music Recital Hall.

Massennet – Under the Linden Trees (Last thing he recorded – same group as Poulenc).

Kurt Weill – 4 Pieces from The Threepenny Opera for Clarinet Quartet.

Bridges to Bloomington CD with Trio Indiana + M Lurie.

Schubert Octet.  Unknown date – live performance by Faculty members of the Music Academy of the West, Lobero Theatre, Santa Barbara, CA
