Tuesday Evening Classics - Christmas Week in Baroque Leipzig
Join host David Schonfeld on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 for a special holiday program. David will play a recent recording of J. S. Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium, BWV 248, performed by soloists with I Barocchisti, under the direction of Diego Fasolis. The work comprises 6 separate cantatas, and was first heard in Leipzig in 1734-35, spanning the period between Christmas Day and Epiphany.
We will also hear some of the Geistliche Konzerte composed by Bach's predecessor, Johann Rosenmüller (ca. 1617-1684) and performed in Leipzig at Christmas time between 1645 and 1655. These are splendid motets for voices and instruments, very much in the grand Italian style.
