Tuesday Evening Classics - Mozart Birthday Special

01/27/2015 4:00 pm
01/27/2015 8:00 pm

Join Tuesday Evening Classics host, David Schonfeld, on January 27, 2015 from 4-8 p.m. for 4 hours of music by Mozart.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on this date in 1756. We will honor him on his 259th Birthday by listening to a complete performance of La clemenza di Tito (The Forgiveness of Titus), K. 621. Mozart composed this opera seria in 1791, little knowing this was to be the last year of his life. He was in the middle of Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) when he was commissioned to compose an opera seria. The work was intended to celebrate the coronation of Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor, as King of Bohemia.

It appears that Mozart completed La clemenza di Tito in only 3 weeks! The opera remained popular for many years after Mozart's death, then fell into neglect due to changing tastes. In our time it is being re-valued for its marvelous music.

Later this week, Hartford area residents will have the chance to attend a staged production of The Magic Flute in English translation, with orchestra at the Hartt School. Click for details.

Preceding and following the opera, David will play a selection of recordings of instrumental works by Mozart.
