EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS

Reviewed by Sam Hatch

If you've been clamoring for a holiday film featuring reindeer whose teeth are covered in frozen, nut-filled feces, then this is the movie for you! Adam Sandler, unfulfilled by only having one film out per year, co-writes, co-produces and performs multitasking voice acting in this (questionably) adult tale of a self-loathing Jewish man (Davey, voiced by Sandler) whose haunted visions of a childhood filled with loss and failure lead him to become a surly town drunk who wants to make everyone else around him miserable before dying.

The real star of the show (aside from the poop-laden reindeer) is Davey's insanely optimistic/myopic basketball coach Whitey (also voiced by Sandler), and his obnoxious roommate/sister Eleanore (guess who?). Davey's introduction to their world results in the very funny musical number Technical Foul. More nihilism and poop jokes appear, though Davey eventually reconnects with the wide-eyed young boy he once was before he adopted a lifestyle of misery and hatred. Can this irredeemable young man find salvation through the true meaning of Hanukkah? Will Adam Sandler unveil yet another version of his holiday classic The Hanukkah Song? Will there be another joke involving reindeer and poop? You betcha!
