WWUH Presents the Tenth Season of
Women's Basketball
It is a milestone year as WWUH and the University
of Hartford's Women Hawk's basketball program celebrate 10 years
together. In recognition of this relationship, the Hawks will designate
one home game this winter as "WWUH-Night" on Wednesday,
February 2nd.
Sixth-year head coach Jennifer Rizzotti
returns nine players and four starters to a team that won a school-record
18 games and finished with the fifth-best turnaround in all of Division
I women's basketball last season. The Hawks garnered votes in the
Associated Press Top 25 national poll for the first time in program
history and ranked 16th in the country in scoring defense.
Hartford returns four of its top five leading
scorers from last season in junior guard Erika Messam (10.9
ppg, 3.8 apg), sophomore guard Ikea Witt (10.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg)
and seniors Liz Stich (9.2 ppg) and Tanika Price (7.2ppg).
The Hawks will play 27 regular season games.
Highlighting the schedule is a match up with defending national
champion Connecticut at the Hartford Civic Center on Dec. 7.
The game will pit Hartford head coach and former UConn All-American
Jennifer Rizzotti against former coach Geno Auriemma. Rizzotti
played for Auriemma from 1992-96 culminating in a perfect 35-0 national
championship season.
Jon Easterbrook '87, '90, a member
of WWUH's public affairs department in the 1980s and director of
marketing services at the university, returns for his 10th year
as the voice of Hartford women's basketball on WWUH Radio. He will
be joined by color analyst Eric Saranik, a member of the University's
graduating class of 1994, who has worked both on-air and as a producer
in the Hartford and New Haven radio markets.
